About Aja Ekadashi

The Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of Bhadrapada, tied to the Puranic story of King Harishchandra — the truthful king of Ayodhya who lost everything and worked at a cremation ground. Sage Gautama told him to fast on this day and keep an overnight vigil to wipe out his sins.

The vrat katha is told by Krishna to Arjuna. Harishchandra, in a dream, gives away his kingdom to a sage. To honour the debt he sells his wife and son, then takes work under a Chandala collecting fees for last rites at the cremation ground — yet never lies. Sage Gautama appears and prescribes this Ekadashi with Jagarana (staying awake all night chanting). At dawn, drums sound in the heavens, flowers fall, his dead son stands alive, and his wife appears in royal dress. The name 'Aja' means 'unborn' — an epithet of Vishnu as the eternal one. The story sets the tone of the fast: it is offered specifically for relief from accumulated sin and reversal of cruel fortune, not for new boons. The night vigil, not just the daytime fast, is what the katha treats as decisive.
