About Ashvayuja Amavasya
The new-moon night that closes the lunar month of Ashvayuja — the same night the lamps of Deepavali are lit. In the south it is the evening of Lakshmi-Kubera puja at home; in Bengal it is Kali Puja, when the darkest tithi of the year is given over to the goddess of the night.
Ashvayuja Amavasya sits at the heart of the five-day Deepavali cluster, between Naraka Chaturdashi the day before and Bali Pratipada the day after. The moonless evening is reserved for Lakshmi Puja: in North and West India, traders open fresh account books (bahi-khata) and invite the goddess into lit homes at pradosha, the twilight hour. In Bengal, Assam and Odisha the same night belongs to Kali — Shaktas worship Dakshina Kali through the night, treating the absence of moonlight as the most charged time for tantric rites. A note on calendars: in the southern Amanta reckoning this tithi closes Ashvayuja, while the northern Purnimanta system calls the very same night Kartika Amavasya. The date is one; only the month-name shifts.
