About Baglamukhi Jayanti

Falls on Vaishakha Shukla Ashtami, marking the day the Mahavidya Bagalamukhi rose from the turmeric-yellow Haridra lake to still a world-ending cyclone. Devotees wear yellow, chant on a haldi mala, and invoke her one specific power — Stambhana, the freezing of an enemy's speech and will.

Her name comes from the Sanskrit 'Valga' — the bridle that controls a horse — so Bagalamukhi is literally the goddess who reins in. The Satya Yuga story has Vishnu doing a thousand years of penance on the banks of the Haridra Sarovara in Saurashtra, a lake stained yellow with turmeric, until the Devi rose from its waters and stilled the storm. That origin fixes her colour code: golden skin, yellow sari, yellow lotuses, japa counted on a turmeric-dyed mala, and the yantra traditionally drawn in turmeric ink on birch bark. Her icon shows her pulling out a demon's tongue with one hand and raising a club with the other — Stambhana made visible. This is why she is the goddess of court cases, debates and lawsuits. Her best-known shrine is the Pitambara Peeth at Datia, founded in the 1920s and famous for anushthans performed for the nation's defence.
