About Baisakhi

On Baisakhi in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh stepped from a tent at Anandpur with a drawn sword and asked for a head — five men volunteered and became the Panj Pyare, the first Khalsa. The same April day marks Punjab's wheat harvest and the solar new year across India.

The 1699 initiation used khande ki pahul — sweetened water (amrit) stirred with a double-edged broadsword. After baptising the Panj Pyare, Guru Gobind Singh knelt and took amrit from them, handing his authority to the community. Initiates took the names Singh (lion) and Kaur (princess) and wore the Five Ks. Guru Amar Das, a century earlier, had already fixed Baisakhi as a mandatory gathering at Goindwal, paired with Diwali. On the day itself, every gurdwara lowers its Nishan Sahib (the saffron flag), washes the pole, and hoists a fresh cloth. In the fields, bhangra — named after bhang (hemp), a crop of the season — celebrates the ripening wheat; kitchens cook yellow rice and kadhi to echo its colour. The same date carries a darker memory: the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of April 13, 1919.
