About Bhairavi Jayanti
Falling on Margashirsha Shukla Purnima, this day marks the birth of Tripura Bhairavi — the fifth Mahavidya and the Shakti of Bhairava. She is the same goddess the Durga Saptashati names Chandi, slayer of the demons Chanda and Munda.
The Narada Pancharatra tells how Bhairavi came to be. Mahakali, wishing to recover her fair form, vanished. Narada found her north of Mount Sumeru and proposed she remarry Shiva — and from her shadow, in anger, Tripura Bhairavi sprang forth. Tantric texts give her two very different faces. In one, she sits on a corpse in a cremation ground with sword, trident and a severed head, one hand raised in abhaya mudra (the 'fear-not' gesture). In the other, she shines like ten thousand rising suns, holding a book and rosary. She presides over Kundalini — the coiled energy at the base of the spine — and her many forms are invoked for specific needs: Shmashana Bhairavi at cremation grounds, Sampatprada Bhairavi for wealth, Kameshwari Bhairavi for marriage.
