About Bheemana Amavasya

A Karnataka women's vrata on the Ashadha new moon, centred on two clay lamps lit as Shiva and Parvati. Girls and wives pray for the long life of brothers and husbands, then a brother smashes open a flour ball — the kadubu — hiding coins inside.

The name 'Bhima' here means 'mighty' — the strength women ask for their male kin, not the Pandava. The vrata follows a Skanda Purana tale: a poor girl was married off to a dead prince (in some tellings, a clay idol). She lit a pair of mud lamps as Shiva and Parvati and worshipped with full faith. The couple revived the prince and blessed her. The two lamps — the deepastambha — are the heart of the puja, which is why the day is also called Deepastambha Pooja. At the close, a brother or young son breaks a kadubu (a wheat-dough ball baked with a coin hidden inside) with his fist or a stone. The coin is his reward; the act seals the sister's prayer for his long life. Women break the fast with fruit and milk, offered first to the divine couple.
