About Bhuvaneshwari Jayanti

Falling on Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi, this day marks the appearance of Bhuvaneshwari — the fourth of the ten Mahavidyas and the Shakti of Bhuvaneshwar Rudra. Her name splits as Bhuvana (the three worlds — earth, sky, heaven) and Ishvari (sovereign): the queen who is the worlds themselves.

The Devi Bhagavata tells why this day matters. A demon named Durgam had seized the Vedas and choked the rains, leaving the earth in famine. The gods and brahmins climbed the Himalayas and prayed; the goddess appeared carrying arrows, lotuses, vegetables and roots. Streams of water poured from her eyes and filled the rivers, reviving every plant and creature — which is why she is also called Shatakshi (hundred-eyed) and Shakambhari (herb-bearer). After slaying Durgam she took the name Durga. The festival has two distinct moods. Householders worship her for children and household plenty, since she is the nurturing mother of the worlds. Tantric sadhakas worship her Yantra and bija mantras for siddhis — the Mahanirvana Tantra says seven crore mantras are engrossed in her service.
