About Buddha Purnima

Theravada tradition holds that Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death all fell on this one Vaisakha full moon — a 'triple coincidence' Mahayana East Asia rejects, celebrating only his birth on a separate date. The United Nations recognised the day as an international holiday in 1999.

The triple-event idea is not in the early Pali canon. It first appears in the Mahavamsa, Sri Lanka's 5th–6th century chronicle, and the festival's modern shape — lanterns, greeting cards, parades, public retellings of the Buddha's life — was largely the work of 19th-century Sri Lankan revivalists, which is why it is sometimes called the 'Buddhist Christmas'. Rituals split along old lines. Monks recite suttas and bathe a small statue of the infant Buddha in fragrant water; lay devotees free caged birds and fish to earn merit. The names also shift by region: Vesak across Theravada Southeast Asia, Saga Dawa Düchen in Tibet (where the whole fourth month is held auspicious), Hanamatsuri in Japan, and Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti in India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
