About Hanuman Jayanti
Unusually for a Hindu festival, Hanuman's birthday is observed on at least four different dates across India — Chaitra Purnima in the north, the day before Diwali at Ayodhya's Hanumangarhi, Margashirsha Amavasya in Tamil Nadu, and Mesha Sankranti in Odisha. Tradition places his birth at sunrise on a Tuesday, in Chitra Nakshatra.
The signature offering is a sindoor-and-oil abhisheka — the idol is smeared head to toe in vermillion mixed with jasmine or mustard oil. The story behind it: Hanuman once saw Sita put sindoor in her hair-parting for Rama's long life, and reasoned that covering his whole body would multiply the blessing. Recitations centre on the Hanuman Chalisa, Tulsidas's 40-verse hymn, and the Sundarkand of the Ramayana — the only book of the epic where Hanuman is the protagonist. Regional practice varies sharply. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, devotees keep a 41-day Deeksha (vow) starting on Chaitra Purnima and ending on the tenth day of Vaishakha Krishna Paksha. In Gujarat the Kartik observance merges with Kali Chaudas and is called Diwali Hanuman Puja.
