About Lakshmi Jayanti
Lakshmi Jayanti is largely a South Indian observance — in the north the same full moon is swallowed by Holi. It is set on Phalguna Purnima because that night usually falls in Uttara Phalguni, the nakshatra linked to Lakshmi. The day's signature rite is Lakshmi Homam.
The image of Lakshmi worshipped on this day is Gaja Lakshmi — the form the Bhagavata Purana describes rising from the churned ocean on an open lotus, flanked by two elephants pouring water from raised vessels. Some traditions add a careful note: Lakshmi was not born at the churning. She had withdrawn into the ocean of milk after Sage Durvasa's curse on the devas, and only returned that day. The central rite is Lakshmi Homam. Priests chant the Shri Suktam from the Rig Veda khila and the Lakshmi Sahasranama — her thousand names — while feeding the fire. The distinctive ahuti is unusual: lotus blossoms dipped in honey, offered one by one. Phalguna Purnima is the last full moon of the Hindu lunar year, so the puja also closes the year's cycle.
