About Lambodara Sankashti Chaturthi
Of the year's twelve Sankashti Chaturthis, this Magha-month one honours Lambodara — the fifth Ashta Vinayaka form, who in the Mudgala Purana slays Krodhasura, the demon of anger. The fast runs from sunrise until devotees sight the moon, when ghee laddus are offered.
The name Lambodara is usually read as 'pot-bellied', but the Mudgala Purana gives it a deeper sense: the one who holds the entire universe within his stomach. The accompanying story explains the form's purpose. When Vishnu took on the Mohini form, even Shiva was momentarily captivated; from his grief after Mohini vanished, a fierce being named Krodhasura emerged — the demon of anger. Gods and sages, battered by Krodhasura, invoked Lambodara, who manifested and promised to destroy him. That is why this day is observed not only for general obstacles but specifically to calm anger and pride. In North India the same tithi is kept as Sakat Chauth, when Sakat Mata is worshipped and mothers fast for the well-being of their sons. Should it fall on a Tuesday, it becomes Angarki Chaturthi, considered especially auspicious.
