About Mahakali Jayanti

Not to be confused with Bengal's Kali Puja on Diwali night — this is the appearance day of Kali as the first of the ten Mahavidyas, observed on Krishna Ashtami of Shravana (Purnimanta Bhadrapada). Worship falls in the Nishita muhurta around midnight.

The Devi Mahatmya places Kali's appearance on a battlefield. Durga faced the demon Raktabija — literally 'blood-seed' — whose every spilled drop spawned a new clone. Kali sprang from Durga's brow and drank the blood mid-air before it could touch the ground. That is the lore the Jayanti commemorates. In the Shakta Tantra map, Kali heads the Kali Kula lineage and stands first among the ten Mahavidyas, with the Devi Bhagavata Purana treating the other nine as her gentle or fierce facets. The Brahmanila Tantra names two forms — black Dakshina Kali and red Sundari Kali; the everyday name 'Kali' refers to her kajal-dark complexion. Because she is worshipped at her midnight hour, the puja is fixed to Nishita-kala rather than daytime — a roughly 44-minute window around true midnight.
