About Maharana Pratap Jayanti

Maharana Pratap was born on Jyeshtha Shukla Tritiya in 1540 at Kumbhalgarh — the Mewar king who refused to bow to Akbar even after losing the Battle of Haldighati in 1576. Rajasthan marks the day with processions, sword displays and tributes at his Udaipur memorial.

The day is tied to one famous episode: the Battle of Haldighati, fought on 21 June 1576 in a narrow pass northwest of Udaipur. The Mughal force was led by a fellow Rajput, Raja Man Singh of Amber, while Pratap's army included Bhil archers and Afghan nobles — so this was never a simple Hindu-versus-Muslim fight. The Mughals won the field, but Pratap escaped: the Jhala chief put on the Rana's royal insignia and drew pursuers away, dying in his place. Pratap then switched to guerrilla raids from the Aravalli hills. By his death in 1597 he had clawed back most of Mewar, losing only Chittor, Ajmer and Mandalgarh. Mewar held out until 1614 — nearly four decades after Haldighati — which is why his birthday, not a victory, became the festival.
