About Mahavira Jayanti

Marks the Janma Kalyanak — one of the five 'auspicious events' in a Tirthankara's life — of Vardhamana, the 24th and last Tirthankara of this cosmic half-cycle. Falls on Chaitra Shukla Trayodashi. The day's signature rite is Abhisheka: bathing the idol, followed by a chariot procession through the streets.

Jain scripture frames Mahavira's birth as the fourth of five Panch Kalyanaka — the great moments every Tirthankara lives through. The Kalpa Sutra, read aloud each year by Shvetambara monks, tells how queen Trishala saw fourteen auspicious dreams during pregnancy — a white elephant, a bull, a lion, the goddess Lakshmi and so on — signs that her child would be a world-ruler or a saviour. Shvetambaras add a startling detail Digambaras reject: Indra ordered the embryo moved from a Brahmin mother, Devananda, into Trishala's Kshatriya womb, so that a Tirthankara would be born into a warrior line. The name 'Vardhamana' — 'one who grows' — was chosen because his family's wealth swelled after his conception. On the day itself, temples re-enact the infant's first bath by gods on Mount Meru through the Abhisheka ritual, and many sanghas lead Ahimsa rallies through the city.
