About Mangala Gauri Vratha - Chaturtha

The fourth Shravana Tuesday in the Mangala Gauri vrat cycle — a fast newly married women traditionally keep for the first five years of marriage. The full vow may run for sixteen straight weeks from the first Tuesday of Shravana, ending with an udyapan ceremony.

Tuesday — Mangalwar — takes its name from Mangala, the auspicious form of Parvati, which is why the day is set apart for her in the month of Shravana. The vrat-katha read aloud at this puja is the story of Dharmapala. He was a wealthy man with no children, and the merit of this vrat finally gave him a virtuous son — which is why women still pray here for progeny, not just for a husband's long life. The offering tray follows a 'sixteen' rule: sixteen laddoos, sixteen betel leaves, sixteen bangles, sixteen kinds of fruit and flowers placed before the goddess. Because north India follows the Purnimanta calendar and the south and west the Amanta, the 'fourth' Tuesday lands on different civil dates in the two regions.
