About Mangala Gauri Vratha - Prathama
The first Tuesday of Shravana, when newlywed women take the Sankalp (vow) that begins Mangala Gauri Vratha. They choose to fast only through Shravana, or to extend it for sixteen consecutive weeks. This opening Tuesday sets the count.
Tuesdays usually belong to Mars or Hanuman, but through Shravana every Tuesday is reassigned to Parvati as Gauri — and the Prathama is when the vow formally begins. The katha read on this day is not about a wife at all. It tells of Dharmapala, a wealthy but childless man who was blessed with a virtuous son through the merit of this vrat. The story is recited aloud so the goddess's gift extends from marital harmony to children and family line. Regional naming and timing diverge sharply: in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and the rest of South India the observance is called Sri Mangala Gowri Vratham, and the first Tuesday itself falls about fifteen days apart in Purnimanta North India versus the Amanta South.
