About Mannettina Amavasye

Mannettina Amavasye is a North Karnataka farmers' new-moon observance honouring bullocks and the earth, offering gratitude for their role in ploughing and monsoon cultivation.

Mannettina Amavasye is an agrarian new-moon observance kept by farming families of North Karnataka to honour bullocks and the fertile earth on which their livelihood depends. The name combines "mannu" (soil) and "ettu" (bullock). Households craft pairs of clay bullocks and worship them with turmeric, vermilion, and flowers, while live bullocks are bathed, decorated with bells and garlands, and fed special dishes. The day expresses thanksgiving to Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva, and prayers for timely rain and a good harvest as the monsoon sowing season begins. The clay figures are later immersed in village ponds.
