About Pavitropana Ekadashi
The Shravana-month Ekadashi that Vaishnavas call Pavitra or Pavitropana — 'the offering of the sacred thread' — when temples drape a freshly spun cotton thread on Vishnu. The same day is also called Putrada Ekadashi, 'giver of sons,' and is the southern and Vaishnava counterpart to the North's Pausha Putrada.
The Vrat Katha, told by Krishna to Arjuna, explains the 'Putrada' name. King Mahajita of Mahishmati had every comfort but no child. Sage Lomasha traced the cause to a past life — on a Jyeshtha Ekadashi the king, hungry for two days, drove a thirsty cow that had just calved away from a reservoir to drink first. Lomasha told the ministers to fast on Shravana Shukla Ekadashi, stay awake all night, and transfer the merit to the king on Dwadashi. The queen then bore a son. Because Hindu tradition expects a son to perform funeral rites and the regular shraddha for ancestors, childlessness was felt as both a worldly and an afterlife grief — which is why this fast is aimed especially at couples hoping for a son.
