About Chaturdashi Shraddha
Chaturdashi Shraddha, also known as Ghata Chaturdashi or Ghayala Chaturdashi, is reserved for family members who did not die a natural death — those killed by weapon, accident, poison, fire or violence. It stands apart from the day-of-death rule that governs most of the fortnight, since these deaths are held to unsettle the soul in a particular way.
Also called Veera Shraddha or Bali Shraddha in some traditions, this day exists because ordinary shraddha rites are considered unable to fully settle a soul that left the body through violence or misadventure, whatever tithi that death actually fell on. The rite follows the fortnight's core form — tarpan of water and black sesame offered facing south, darbha grass worn on the hand, and pind daan of rice and barley — completed with a meal served to invited brahmins. It is performed by the eldest son or closest surviving relative, with particular care given to invoking the departed by name.
