About Dwadashi Shraddha

Also called Baras Shradh, this day is kept for ancestors who died on a Dwadashi tithi. Tradition also treats it as suitable for those who had taken sannyas or lived as a yati, a renunciate, before death — ascetics whose rites differ from a householder's and are placed here.

A sannyasi renounces the household rites that ordinarily bind a person to family and lineage, so his shraddha is placed apart from the tithi-of-death pattern followed for most ancestors — Dwadashi is held as the tithi suited to this rite, whatever day the ascetic actually died. The offering keeps the fortnight's shared form: tarpan of water and black sesame, pind daan of rice and barley, and a meal served to invited brahmins, performed while seated facing south with a ring of darbha grass worn on the hand. The eldest son, or whichever descendant remains connected to the ascetic's memory, ordinarily conducts the rite.
