About Saptami Shraddha
The seventh day of the fortnight is kept for those who died on a Saptami tithi. Like several days in this fifteen-day period, it holds no distinct legend of its own; its place is defined only by the tithi rule that governs the whole of Pitru Paksha.
Saptami Shraddha is performed with the same care as any day in Pitru Paksha, since the fortnight does not rank one ancestor's rite above another's. The karta faces south, offers tarpan of water and black sesame, and wears darbha grass as a mark of the ritual's sanctity. Rice-and-barley pindas are then offered to the father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and the rite closes with a meal given to brahmins invited to stand in for the departed. The eldest son ordinarily performs the ceremony on behalf of the household, invoking the ancestor by name where it is known.
