About Tritiya Shraddha

The third day of the fortnight is set aside for ancestors who died on a Tritiya tithi. As with most days in Pitru Paksha, it carries no separate legend or special category of its own — its significance comes entirely from matching the death tithi to the day of remembrance.

Families observing Tritiya Shraddha follow the same core rite performed through the fortnight. Water mixed with black sesame is offered as tarpan while facing south, a ring of darbha grass worn on the hand as a mark of the ritual, and rice-and-barley pindas are offered to the three preceding generations — father, grandfather and great-grandfather — before a meal is served to brahmins invited for the occasion. The rite is ordinarily led by the eldest son, though other male descendants of the paternal line may perform it in his absence.
