About Randhan Chhath

On the sixth waning day of Shravana, Gujarati kitchens run all day — then go silent. Whatever is cooked on Randhan Chhath must feed the family through the next day, Shitala Satam, when lighting the hearth is forbidden. 'Randhan' simply means cooking.

The rule comes from Shitala Mata, the goddess invoked against fevers and pox like measles and smallpox. To honour her 'cooling' nature, no fresh fire burns in the kitchen on her day — so the food eaten then must be cold and a day old. Randhan Chhath is the practical answer to that vow. Households cook in bulk, choosing dishes that keep well overnight without souring in the Shravana monsoon — flatbreads, fried snacks, jaggery sweets, and milk preparations. The same logic runs through North India as Basoda, observed after Holi on Sheetala Ashtami. The shared idea: the kitchen hearth, normally a place of heat and transformation, is stilled for a day in deference to a goddess whose blessing is the absence of inner heat — fever.
