About Rangabhari Ekadashi

Rangbhari Ekadashi is the day Holi colour first appears in Kashi and Braj. On Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi — between Mahashivaratri and Holi — Banaras marks Shiva bringing his bride Parvati home to Kashi, and devotees shower the Vishwanath palanquin with gulal.

Two threads run through this Ekadashi. Scripturally it is Amalaki Ekadashi, a Vishnu fast centred on the amla tree — said in the Padma Purana to have sprung from Vishnu's mouth. The vrat katha tells of a hungry bird-hunter who, by chance, spent the night in a temple where the story was being read; he was reborn as Prince Vasuratha, ruler of ten thousand villages. The Kashi layer is folk and joyous. This is the gauna day — when Shiva, having married Parvati at Shivaratri, finally brings her home to Kashi. Mahants of the Vishwanath temple carry her silver image in a palanquin through the old lanes, and the city throws gulal on the bride and groom. Holi in Banaras officially starts here. In Vrindavan, Banke Bihari is dressed in white and smeared with colour on the same evening — the formal opening of Braj Holi.
