About Ravivara Shukla Pradosa

Ravi Pradosha is a Trayodashi (13th lunar day) dusk-fast for Shiva that lands on a Sunday — the day ruled by Surya. This combination is sought out specifically as a remedy for Pitru Dosha and weak Surya in the birth chart, and is said to grant longevity, good health and social standing.

The fast is timed to Pradosha Kaal — the 1.5 hours on either side of sunset on Trayodashi — not the full day. Shaiva tradition holds that Shiva forgave the devas and asuras at this hour and danced between the horns of Nandi, his bull; that dance is why dusk on the 13th tithi is considered the most generous moment to approach him. At a temple, devotees perform Soma Sutra Pradakshinam — a special zig-zag walk around the lingam that stops at the drainage channel rather than crossing it, unlike ordinary circumambulation. The Ravi Pradosha Vrat Katha tells of a poor Brahmin who rose to prosperity through this specific fast, which is why Sunday observance is linked with relief from poverty and social dishonour alongside its Surya-remedy purpose.
