About Vaikasi Visakam

The day Murugan was born — when the six sparks from Shiva's third eye, nursed by the six Krittika stars in the Saravana reed-pond, fused into one six-faced child. Falls on Visakha nakshatra in Tamil Vaikasi (May–June). Devotees walk milk pots to Murugan temples for an abhishekam (ritual bath) of the deity.

The six faces are the heart of the day. Lore says Murugan has them so he can watch all four directions, the heavens and the netherworld at once. The six Arupadai Veedu — Murugan's six abodes in Tamil Nadu — each mark the day in their own way. Tiruchendur, on the Bay of Bengal, is where he is said to have thanked Shiva after killing the asura Surapadma; its gopuram (gateway tower) faces west, away from the sea. At Swamimalai near Kumbakonam, he is Swaminathaswamy — the son who taught his father the meaning of Om — and devotees climb sixty steps, one for each year of the Tamil cycle. At Palani he stands as Dhandayuthapani, a renunciate carved from Navabashanam, a blend of nine minerals.
