First day of the Malayalam month Vrischikam, this Sankranti opens the 41-day Mandala Kalam vratham — when Ayyappa devotees don black mundus, take to strict celibacy and a vegetarian diet, and prepare for the Sabarimala pilgrimage that ends with Mandala Pooja in Dhanu Masam.
Vrischika Sankranti belongs to a special class of four — the Vishnupadi Sankrantis (along with Simha, Vrishabha and Kumbha). For these four, the punya kaal for bathing, charity and shraddha falls in the 16 ghatis (roughly 6 hours 24 minutes) BEFORE the moment of transit, not after — so the timing of any dana must be calculated carefully. In Kerala the day also kicks off the 41-day Mandala Vratham: devotees rise before dawn, visit an Ayyappa shrine twice a day, sleep on the floor, and address each other only as 'Swami'. The vratham ends with Mandala Pooja at Sabarimala on the 11th or 12th day of Dhanu Masam. In Tamil Nadu the same sunrise opens Karthigai Masam, the month that builds towards Karthigai Deepam.
