About Yajur Upakarma
On Shravana Purnima, Yajurvedi Brahmins replace the yajnopavita (sacred thread) and reopen the six-month Vedic study term that was paused during the monsoon. Tamils call it Avani Avittam; in Andhra it is Jandhyala Purnima — from 'jandhyam', the thread itself.
The day pivots on one act of repair. Before the new thread is worn, the householder recites the Kamokarshit Mahasankalpa — a long confession of every ritual lapse of the past year, said to release him from those errors. Only then is the old thread discarded and the Vedas formally restarted. The choice of Shravana Purnima is tied to Hayagriva, the horse-headed form of Vishnu: the demons Madhu and Kaitabha stole the Vedas from Brahma, and Hayagriva is said to have recovered and returned them on this day. So study resumes on the very date the scriptures were rescued. The next morning is Gayatri Japam, when the Gayatri mantra is chanted 1008 times to atone for mispronunciations of the previous year — making the two-day sequence a full reset of a Brahmin's ritual life.
