Bhishma Ashtami
On this Magha Shukla Ashtami, Bhishma — sonless by his vow of celibacy — finally released the life he had held back for 58 nights on a bed of arrows, waiting for Uttarayana. Devotees offer him tarpan of water and sesame, a rite normally reserved for one's own father.

About
The tarpan is the unusual part. Hindu shraddha is offered by a son to his deceased father — yet Bhishma died childless. So the texts grant a special permission: any Hindu, even one whose father is still living, may perform Bhishma Tarpan, naming him as the recipient. This is the only such exception in the calendar. The day is also remembered for what Bhishma did from his arrow-bed before dying. At Krishna's urging, Yudhishthira approached the fallen grandsire for dharma instruction, and Bhishma replied with the Vishnu Sahasranama — the thousand names of Vishnu — recorded in the Mahabharata's Anushasana Parva, chapter 149. Many households therefore recite the Sahasranama on this day alongside the water-and-sesame offering. Four days later, Magha Shukla Dwadashi is kept as Bhishma Dwadashi, closing the short cycle of his death rites.

Festival Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Hindu festivals are tied to a specific Tithi, not a fixed date — so the day shifts every year and even varies slightly across cities.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

All of this is available inside the Dharmayana app — no fixed schedule, use it whenever you need it.
