Ganga Dussehra
Ganga Dussehra marks the day the river goddess fell from Shiva's matted hair onto earth — Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami under Hasta Nakshatra, per the Brahma Purana. The name means 'destroyer of ten sins,' and the day's rituals turn on the number ten: ten fruits, ten lamps, ten gifts to ten Brahmins.

About
The story behind the day comes from the Ramayana (Bala Kanda 38–44) and the Skanda Purana. King Sagara's 60,000 sons were burnt to ash by the sage Kapila's curse. Their great-great-grandson Bhagiratha spent generations in penance to bring the heavenly Ganga down to wet those ashes and free their souls. Earth could not take her fall, so Shiva caught her in his matted locks and released a single thin stream — the Bhagirathi. The 'das-hara' (ten-destroyer) rituals echo this: devotees offer ten fruits, ten diyas, and sesame, barley and wheat — ten kilos each — to ten Brahmins, while chanting 'Gangayai Namah.' In Mathura, Vrindavan and Bateshwar the Yamuna is honoured alongside Ganga, with seasonal offerings of muskmelon and cucumber, sharbat for passers-by, and community kite-flying.
