About Govardhan Puja

When the people of Vrindavan prepared their yearly offering to Indra, young Krishna asked them to honour Govardhan hill instead — the hill that fed their cows and gave them shelter. Angered, Indra sent seven days of storm. Krishna lifted the whole hill on his little finger and held it like an umbrella until the rain stopped, and Indra bowed in humility. Today families shape a small Govardhan from cow dung or clay in the courtyard, decorate it with flowers and lamps, and walk around it in parikrama. Temples in Braj and Pushtimarg build Annakut — often 56 dishes (Chhappan Bhog) — offered to Krishna and then shared as prasad. Cows are bathed, adorned and fed, honouring the wealth that sustains every household.
