The grandest day at Kerala's Guruvayur Sri Krishna temple, falling on the Shukla Ekadashi of Vrischikam (Nov–Dec). It marks the day Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri finished the Narayaneeyam in 1587 and was cured of paralysis at the Lord's feet — celebrated with the night-long Ekadashi Vilakku lamp festival.
Why is Guruvayupura Ekadashi observed?
The day is steeped in Guruvayur's own lore. One legend says Vishnu, visiting Yama's realm, was moved by the cries of tormented souls and uttered the word 'Ekadashi' — the very sound wiped away their sins, which is why fasting on this day is held to purify. Another tradition holds that Indra descends with Kamadhenu, and the waters of Kasi, Badri, Sabarigiri, Palani, the Ganga and the Yamuna gather invisibly at the temple tank. The same date is also linked to the consecration of the Guruvayur idol and to Krishna's delivery of the Gita to Arjuna. Devotees believe a single sight of the Ekadashi Vilakku — the festival of lights on the eve — burns away a lifetime of sins. Narayaneeyam, Bhattathiri's 1,034-verse condensation of the Bhagavata Purana, is recited through the day.
