What is Kaishika Ekadashi?
The one Ekadashi with its own Purana. On Kartika Shukla Ekadashi, Sri Vaishnavas at Tirukurungudi in Tamil Nadu stay up all night to hear the Kaisika Puranam — the story of Nampaduvan, an outcaste singer whose song in the Kaisiki ragam saved a brahmin-turned-demon.
Why is Kaishika Ekadashi observed?
The Kaisika Purana, a chapter of the Varaha Purana, is told by Lord Varaha to Bhudevi. Nampaduvan, a chandala devotee, sets out on this Ekadashi night to sing to Lord Nambi at Tirukurungudi. On the way a brahmarakshasa — a brahmin cursed into a demon — stops him for food. Nampaduvan begs leave to finish his song and swears to come back. The demon, doubting that a low-caste man would honour an oath, lets him go to test him. He returns. Stunned, the demon asks instead for the punya of one Kaisiki-raga song, and is freed from his curse. Lord Vishnu later declares that hearing this story equals the fruit of the vrat itself. The all-night Kaisika Puranam Sevakalam at Tirukurungudi has continued in the Sri Vaishnava tradition for centuries.
