Kanakadasa Jayanti
Kanakadasa Jayanti marks the birth of the 16th-century Kuruba-shepherd saint who was barred from entering Udupi's Krishna temple because of his caste — and for whom, legend says, the idol turned west and a wall cracked open. That gap, the Kanakana Kindi, is still worshipped today.

About
Kanakadasa was a disciple of Vyasatirtha, the same Madhva teacher who guided Purandaradasa, and he signed every song with the pen-name 'Kaginele Adi Keshava' — the Vishnu of his home village in Haveri. His best-known work, Ramadhyana Charite, is a courtroom debate in verse: humble ragi millet argues against proud rice before Lord Rama, and ragi wins. The allegory is blunt — a defence of the poor against the well-fed upper castes. He also wrote Mohanatarangini and Nalacharitre, choosing everyday Kannada over Sanskrit so farmers and weavers could sing along. The Jayanti, observed on a Kartika tithi, is a Karnataka government holiday; processions and kirtana recitals are held at Kaaginele, his birthplace, and at the Udupi shrine where the famous window faces him.
