Masik Durga Ashtami
Masik Durga Ashtami is the monthly rehearsal of Maha Ashtami — the eighth day of Sharadiya Navratri when Durga's fight with Mahishasura reaches its peak. Devotees who keep the annual fast repeat it every Shukla Paksha Ashtami, treating each month's eighth tithi as a small Ashtami in its own right.

About
The day takes its weight from the Devi Mahatmya (part of the Markandeya Purana, around the 5th–6th century CE), where Mahishasura holds a boon that no man can kill him — so the gods pool their energies into a female form, Durga. On the great annual Ashtami this story climaxes at the Sandhi moment: the last 24 minutes of Ashtami joined to the first 24 minutes of Navami, when the goddess Chamunda is said to have sprung out to slay the demons Chanda and Munda. Monthly observers compress that arc into a single fast day. Many read a chapter of the Durga Saptashati (the 700 verses of the Devi Mahatmya), light lamps at dusk, and offer flowers — a quiet, household-scale Ashtami between the big ones in Chaitra and Ashwin.

Festival Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Hindu festivals are tied to a specific Tithi, not a fixed date — so the day shifts every year and even varies slightly across cities.

Open the Panchanga for the festival day to see the exact Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Shubh Muhurat for pooja in your location.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

All of this is available inside the Dharmayana app — no fixed schedule, use it whenever you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindu festivals — like Diwali, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami — mark sacred moments tied to deities, seasons and lunar/solar cycles. Each festival has its own story, vrat, prarthana and rituals, and is timed using the Panchanga so the date moves slightly every year against the Gregorian calendar.
