On this one night each year, the diamond crown of Cheluvanarayana — the Vairamudi — leaves a government treasury under armed police escort and is placed on the deity by a priest who keeps his eyes shut, because tradition forbids any human seeing it before the god does.
Why is Melukote Vairamudi Utsava observed?
The Vairamudi is the oldest of three crowns owned by the Melukote deity, alongside the Rajamudi gifted by the Mysore Wodeyars and the Krishnarajamudi. Each is worn on a different night of the ten-day Brahmotsava in Phalguna (March–April). The Sthala Purana says the crown is Vishnu's own — Garuda was carrying it back to Vaikuntha when the asura Virochana tried to snatch it, and it came to rest here on Yadugiri hill. Because it is considered too sacred for ordinary sight, the crown is stored year-round in the Mandya treasury and brought up the hill in a sealed casket. The priest binds his eyes before fixing it on Cheluvapille Raya, the festival image that Ramanuja is said to have recovered from a Delhi sultan in the 12th century. Devotees then see it only by torchlight, as the deity is taken out on the Garuda vahana.
