Nirjala Ekadashi
The one Ekadashi where even water is forbidden — falling in Shukla Jyeshtha at the peak of north Indian summer, between Vrishabha and Mithuna Sankranti. Vyasa told Bhima that this single fast carries the merit of all twenty-four Ekadashis in a year.

About
The Brahma Vaivarta Purana tells the story behind the alternate names. Bhima admitted to his grandfather Vyasa that he could worship and give donations, but could not stay hungry even for a single meal. Vyasa offered him one escape clause — fast just once a year, in Shukla Jyeshtha, but without a drop of water. Because this date lands in the hottest weeks of the year, the rituals are shaped by thirst. The signature daan is a pot of water, covered with a cloth and topped with gold, given to a worthy recipient. Hand fans, umbrellas, sandals and grain are also given to the needy. The rule on water is precise: up to 6 Masha (a pinch) is allowed for Achamana and bathing — anything more is treated like drinking liquor. On Dwadashi morning, devotees offer full water pots to Brahmins before breaking their own fast.

Festival Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Hindu festivals are tied to a specific Tithi, not a fixed date — so the day shifts every year and even varies slightly across cities.

Open the Panchanga for the festival day to see the exact Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Shubh Muhurat for pooja in your location.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

All of this is available inside the Dharmayana app — no fixed schedule, use it whenever you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindu festivals — like Diwali, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami — mark sacred moments tied to deities, seasons and lunar/solar cycles. Each festival has its own story, vrat, prarthana and rituals, and is timed using the Panchanga so the date moves slightly every year against the Gregorian calendar.
