About

The defining moment of her life came in June 1872 at Dakshineswar. On the new-moon night of Phalaharini Kali Puja — when Kali is worshipped as the destroyer of the fruits of past actions — Ramakrishna seated his young wife on the ritual throne and performed Shodashi Puja, offering to her the merit of every spiritual practice he had ever undertaken. After his death in 1886, she stepped out of domestic seclusion and began initiating disciples with mantras, shuttling between her village home in Jayrambati and the disciples' quarters in Kolkata. Her followers call her Sri Sri Maa, the Holy Mother. Two institutions carry her name forward: Sri Sarada Math, founded in 1954 as a monastic order run entirely by women, and the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission of 1960, focused on work with women and children.
