Frequently Asked Questions
When is Sattila Ekadashi in 2027?
Sattila Ekadashi 2027 falls on Monday, 1 February 2027. Ekadashi tithi runs from 08:41 AM, 1 Feb to 11:10 AM, 2 Feb IST, as calculated for Ujjain. Times shift by a few minutes for other cities.
What is Sattila Ekadashi?
Named from 'shat' (six) and 'tila' (sesame), this Magha Krishna Paksha Ekadashi prescribes sesame seeds in exactly six ways — bathing in sesame water, rubbing sesame paste, offering it in havan, eating it, donating it, and accepting it as a gift.
Why is Sattila Ekadashi observed?
The vrat katha, from the Bhavishya-Uttara Purana, is told by Sage Pulastya to Sage Dalbhya. A Brahmani fasted on every Ekadashi but refused to give anything away. When she reached Vishnu's abode after death, her house there stood empty — proof that fasting without charity earns nothing. That is why this day pairs the fast with daana of sesame in particular. Scripture promises heaven for as many thousand years as seeds one donates. The havan uses 108 balls rolled from cow dung, cotton and sesame, prepared under Pushya Nakshatra. Black sesame is reserved for the fire and worship; white or brown sesame is given to brahmins and eaten. Vishnu is offered pumpkin, coconut and guava, and khichdi the next morning at parana (fast-breaking).
Which prarthanas are recited on Sattila Ekadashi?
Vishnu Shodasa Nama Stotram, Dwadashakshara Mantra and Vishnu Shanthakaram Mantra are recited on Sattila Ekadashi. You can listen to them with audio on this page.
