About Swarna Gowri Vratha
On Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, the day before Ganesh Chaturthi, married women in Karnataka and Andhra welcome Gauri as a daughter visiting her parents' home. A clay idol is dressed in a saree and offered bagina — a tray of turmeric, kumkum and bangles passed between married women.
The southern Gauri Habba and the northern Hartalika Teej fall on the same tithi but tell different halves of one story. Up north, women shape sand idols of both Shiva and Parvati and keep a nirjala fast (no food or water), recalling how Parvati's friend hid her in the forest so her father could not marry her off to Vishnu — the name Hartalika comes from 'harat' (abduction) and 'aalika' (female friend). In Karnataka, Shiva is absent from the puja. Gauri arrives alone, as a married daughter visiting her mother. Women tie a sixteen-knot yellow thread, the gauri dara, on the wrist and exchange the Morada bagina — a winnowing tray holding rice, turmeric, kumkum, a comb, a mirror and bangles. The next morning her son Ganesha comes to fetch her back to Kailasa.
