Up north, women shape sand idols of both Shiva and Parvati and keep a nirjala fast (no food or water), recalling how Parvati's friend hid her in the forest so her father could not marry her off to Vishnu — the name Hartalika comes from 'harat' (abduction) and 'aalika' (female friend). In Karnataka, Shiva is absent from the puja. Gauri arrives alone, as a married daughter visiting her mother. Women tie a sixteen-knot yellow thread, the gauri dara, on the wrist and exchange the Morada bagina — a winnowing tray holding rice, turmeric, kumkum, a comb, a mirror and bangles. The next morning her son Ganesha comes to fetch her back to Kailasa.
