What is Vaikuntha Ekadasi?
The one day each year when Srirangam's Paramapada Vasal — the 'gate to paradise' — is unlocked, and Ranganatha is carried through it before dawn. Observed on the Shukla Ekadashi of Margazhi (Dec–Jan), it draws lakhs of pilgrims who walk through the gate believing it secures Vaikuntha after death.
Why is Vaikuntha Ekadasi observed?
The vrat traces to a Padma Purana story. While Vishnu rested in a cave, the demon Mura crept up to kill him; a goddess sprang from Vishnu's eleventh faculty, slew Mura, and was named Ekadashi. Vishnu granted her a boon — anyone who fasts on her day reaches his abode. Hence the other name, Mukkoti Ekadashi, from the belief that thirty-three crore devas come down to watch. The day's centre of gravity is Srirangam. The reclining Ranganatha is taken through the Paramapada Vasal into the thousand-pillared hall, and the gate — shut the rest of the year — is opened to pilgrims for the ten 'Pagal Pathu' days. Kerala calls the same day Swarga Vathil Ekadashi, 'door to heaven.' At Tirumala, Venkateswara's darshan begins through a special northern entrance opened only now.
What are the other names for Vaikuntha Ekadasi?
Vaikuntha Ekadasi is also known as Mukkoti Ekadashi and Swarga Vathil Ekadashi.
Which prarthanas are recited on Vaikuntha Ekadasi?
Vishnu Shodasa Nama Stotram, Vishnu Vandana, Dwadashakshara Mantra and Panduranga Japa are recited on Vaikuntha Ekadasi. You can listen to them with audio on this page.
