The Vaishnava observance of Shravana Putrada Ekadashi — kept on the second day when the tithi straddles two sunrises. About
The story behind the fast comes from the Bhavishyottara Purana. King Mahajita of Mahishmati had every comfort but no heir — the fruit of a wrong done in a past life. Sage Lomasha advised his courtiers to keep the Shravana Shukla Ekadashi fast and transfer its merit to the king on Dwadashi. The queen soon conceived, and the day came to be called Putrada — 'giver of sons'. The Vaishnava name Pavitropana points to a parallel ritual: a pavitra, a looped thread of cotton, silk or darbha grass, is consecrated and placed on the Vishnu icon to absolve any error in the past year's worship. Devotees recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and offer yellow cloth, fruits and sweets, breaking the fast only after sunrise within Dwadashi tithi.
