Frequently Asked Questions
When is Vijaya Ekadashi in 2027?
Vijaya Ekadashi 2027 falls on Wednesday, 3 March 2027. Ekadashi tithi runs from 04:44 AM, 3 Mar to 07:24 AM, 4 Mar IST, as calculated for Ujjain. Times shift by a few minutes for other cities.
What is Vijaya Ekadashi?
The Ekadashi Rama is said to have observed on the eve of crossing the ocean to Lanka. Falling in Phalguna Krishna Paksha, its Skanda Purana katha names sage Bakadalbhya as the one who prescribed it — and asks the devotee to fast alongside their 'army', meaning the whole household.
Why is Vijaya Ekadashi observed?
The Vrat Katha, set in the Skanda Purana, has Rama stranded on the ocean shore before the Lanka war. Sage Bakadalbhya (also spelt Vakdalbhya) tells him this fast alone will carry his army across. The prescription is unusually specific. On Dashami, set up a kalasha — a pot of gold, silver, copper or clay — filled with water, with seven grains placed beneath it and barley on top, and a small golden image of Vishnu installed above. The devotee sits before this pot through Ekadashi and keeps an all-night vigil. On Dwadashi, after bathing in a river, the whole arrangement is gifted to a Brahmin. The sage told Rama to observe it with his military commanders — so unlike most Ekadashis, Vijaya is framed as a collective fast for shared victory, not a private one.
Which prarthanas are recited on Vijaya Ekadashi?
Vishnu Shodasa Nama Stotram, Dwadashakshara Mantra and Vishnu Shanthakaram Mantra are recited on Vijaya Ekadashi. You can listen to them with audio on this page.
