Aadi Perukku
Held on the 18th day of Aadi, when the southwest monsoon swells the Cauvery to its yearly peak — 'pathinettu' (18) plus 'perukku' (rise). Married women gather on the riverbank with five kinds of mixed rice on banana leaves, thanking the river that has just begun the kuruvai paddy season in the delta.

About
The festival belongs to the Cauvery's rhythm, not a temple's. By the 18th of Aadi the river is brimming from Karnataka's monsoon, and farmers in Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli and Karur are wading into the fields for the kuruvai sowing. The rites are led by women. Newlyweds visit the water together; a turmeric-dyed yellow thread, the kaapu, is tied on the wrist for marital well-being, and pregnant women often have their valaikaapu (bangle ceremony) timed to this day. The food offering is specific — five mixed rices (sweet pongal, lemon, tamarind, coconut and curd rice) laid on banana leaves at the bank, eaten after the river has been worshipped. At Karikala Chola's Kallanai dam (2nd century CE) the gathering is largest. Note: this is not Aadi Pooram, which honours Andal a few days earlier.

Festival Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Hindu festivals are tied to a specific Tithi, not a fixed date — so the day shifts every year and even varies slightly across cities.

Open the Panchanga for the festival day to see the exact Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Shubh Muhurat for pooja in your location.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

All of this is available inside the Dharmayana app — no fixed schedule, use it whenever you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindu festivals — like Diwali, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami — mark sacred moments tied to deities, seasons and lunar/solar cycles. Each festival has its own story, vrat, prarthana and rituals, and is timed using the Panchanga so the date moves slightly every year against the Gregorian calendar.
