Bonalu
A Telangana state festival born from a vow: in 1813, soldiers from Hyderabad posted in Ujjain prayed to Mahakali to lift a plague back home and built her a temple on their return. Held across the Sundays of Ashada, women carry decorated rice pots — Bonalu — to village goddess shrines.

About
The word Bonam comes from the Telugu Bhojanam, meaning a meal. Each pot holds rice cooked with milk, jaggery and curd, topped with neem leaves, turmeric, vermilion and a small lamp — food a daughter would cook for her mother. Two figures set Bonalu apart from other goddess festivals. Pothuraju, the goddess's brother, is played by a bare-chested man in a red dhoti smeared with turmeric, who dances ahead of the procession cracking a whip to clear her path. The next morning brings Rangam: an unmarried woman stands barefoot on an earthen pot in trance and answers questions about the year ahead as the goddess's voice. The Hyderabad cycle moves week by week — Golconda Fort's Jagadambika first, then Secunderabad's Ujjaini Mahakali, then Lal Darwaza in the Old City — ending with the Ghatam being immersed in the Musi river.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

All of this is available inside the Dharmayana app — no fixed schedule, use it whenever you need it.
