Chaitra Navratri Pratipada
Chaitra Navratri opens with Ghatasthapana — Devi is invoked into a clay pot ringed by seven grains sown in soil. The sprouts that rise over nine days are read as an omen for the year's harvest. The day belongs to Shailputri, the bull-riding Parvati reborn after Sati.

About
Shailputri means 'daughter of the mountain' — Parvati's rebirth after she ended her life as Sati, daughter of Daksha. Yogis link her to the Muladhara, the root chakra, so Day 1 is where the nine-day climb up the chakras begins. She also rules the Moon, so people with a weak or afflicted Moon in their charts are told to fast today. The Ghatasthapana itself is strictly timed: it must be done in the first third of the day while Pratipada runs, never at night, never on Amavasya. The pot is filled with water, durva grass, betel nut, five leaves and a coin, then capped with a coconut. In the Deccan, the same morning is Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Andhra and Karnataka — the regional New Year.

Festival Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Hindu festivals are tied to a specific Tithi, not a fixed date — so the day shifts every year and even varies slightly across cities.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

All of this is available inside the Dharmayana app — no fixed schedule, use it whenever you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindu festivals — like Diwali, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami — mark sacred moments tied to deities, seasons and lunar/solar cycles. Each festival has its own story, vrat, prarthana and rituals, and is timed using the Panchanga so the date moves slightly every year against the Gregorian calendar.
