What is Chaitra Navratri Tritiya?
Day three of Chaitra Navratri honours Chandraghanta — Parvati's married form, who took the crescent moon onto her brow only after wedding Shiva. The half-moon is shaped like a temple bell (ghanta), and its sound is said to drive evil spirits from her devotees. Kheer is the day's offering.
Why is Chaitra Navratri Tritiya observed?
Chandraghanta is the third of the Navadurga, and her dhyana verse places her at the Manipura chakra — the navel centre of fire and willpower — naming her Tritiya Durga, three-eyed and riding a tigress. She has ten arms carrying trishul, mace, sword, bow, arrow, lotus, japa mala and kamandalu, with the remaining hands held in varada and abhaya mudras (boon-giving and fear-not). She is also said to govern Shukra (Venus). Devotees offer kheer, a milk pudding — milk being the food of the moon she wears. The verses recited on this day come from the Durga Saptashati, the seven-hundred-verse text embedded in the Markandeya Purana and dated to roughly the 5th–6th century CE, which is the oldest Sanskrit work to treat the Goddess as supreme.
