When is Govatsa Dwadashi in 2026?
Govatsa Dwadashi 2026 falls on Thursday, 5 November 2026. Dwadashi tithi runs from 10:36 AM, 5 Nov to 10:31 AM, 6 Nov IST, as calculated for Ujjain. Times shift by a few minutes for other cities.
What is Govatsa Dwadashi?
The opening day of the five-day Diwali cycle in Maharashtra, falling one day before Dhanteras. Mothers worship a cow with her calf and fast from wheat and all milk products — even ghee and curd — praying for the long life of their children.
Why is Govatsa Dwadashi observed?
The Bhavishya Purana prescribes this vrat on Kartika Krishna Dwadashi, and it is also called Nandini Vrat after Nandini, the daughter of Kamadhenu — the wish-granting cow. The name Vasu Baras points to Vasu, a presiding lord of wealth worshipped alongside the cow, which is why the day opens Diwali rather than sitting apart from it. The ritual is specific: the cow and calf are bathed, marked with turmeric and vermilion, and fed jaggery and soaked gram — not milk, since milk products are forbidden to the observer all day. If no cow is at hand, a clay image or a drawing of cow-and-calf is worshipped instead. In Gujarat the same day is Vagh Baras, when traders close their old chopda (account books) before opening fresh ledgers at Chopda Pujan on Lakshmi Puja night.
What are the other names for Govatsa Dwadashi?
