Karwa Chauth
Named for the karwa — the spouted clay pot used to pour an arghya (water offering) to the moon — this Kartik Krishna Chaturthi fast is anchored in the Veeravati legend, where seven brothers faked a moonrise with a mirror and a distant fire, breaking the fast too early and costing the heroine's husband his life.

About
The dharmashastra digests Dharmasindhu, Nirnayasindhu and Vratraj list this day as Karaka Chaturthi, where 'karaka' means a small water pitcher. The pot is central: it carries the arghya to the moon and is then given away to a Brahmin or another married woman. The day starts before dawn with sargi — fruits, milk sweets and fried snacks sent by the mother-in-law in an earthen pot — eaten to power a strict nirjala fast (no food, not a drop of water). In Punjab, the wife's mother also sends baya: sindoor, sweets, pulses and rice for the in-laws. The first deity worshipped is Gaura or Chauth Mata, a form of Parvati as Akhand Saubhagyavati, followed by Shiva, Kartikeya and Ganesha. At moonrise women pass the filled karwa among themselves seven times, then view the moon and the husband through a fine sieve — an image fixed in popular memory by films like DDLJ and Baghban.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindu festivals — like Diwali, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami — mark sacred moments tied to deities, seasons and lunar/solar cycles. Each festival has its own story, vrat, prarthana and rituals, and is timed using the Panchanga so the date moves slightly every year against the Gregorian calendar.
